Pill Take Back

11 Apr

The 25th Judicial District Drug Task Force, Atoka Police Department, and Tipton County Sheriff’s Office will be TAKING BACK UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS on Saturday, April 27th 2013, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m at Atoka City Hall & Tipton County Criminal Justice Complex

Here is the press release from the office of

 District Attorney General D.Michael Dunavant

TNseal

Tipton County, Tennessee – On Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the 25th Judicial District Drug Task Force, Atoka Police Department, Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your medications for disposal to either the Atoka City Hall at 334 Atoka-Munford Road, Atoka, Tennessee, or the Tipton County Criminal Justice Complex at 1801 South College Street, Covington, Tennessee.

Prescription drug abuse in this country is an epidemic.  You could be partly to blame without even knowing it. With pill abuse at record levels, addicts are looking in as many medicine cabinets as possible – maybe even yours.  We can help.  On Saturday, April 27, 2013, DEA and its partners nationwide will operate collection sites in your community where Americans can turn in their unused, unneeded, and expired prescription drug medications – no questions asked.  This is a free, anonymous service that will help keep your home safe and could save lives.  Prescription drugs treat illness and alleviate pain, but they should only be used when prescribed by a doctor.  Unfortunately, these medications often end up in the wrong hands.  More than 70 percent of people who abuse these medications say they get them from family or friends. Many users of street drugs like heroin start with abusing painkillers. Don’t be an unknowing source.  Don’t harm the water supply by flushing your medicine down the toilet. Strengthen your community and make your home safer by participating in this national initiative.  For more information and to find a collection site near you, visit www.dea.gov

Local law enforcement agencies like the 25th Judicial District Drug Task Force, the Atoka Police Department, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office, are proud to participate with the DEA in this important public safety initiative, and will continue to hold prescription drug take-back events every few months.

Catching Up

22 Mar

Since my hand started feeling better and I have a moment to sit down, I thought it would be a good time to catch up with you all.  Not that it is 100% better, but at least I can use it.  I am still seeking medical help for it.  In fact, yesterday, I had a nerve conduction study and EMG.  The nerve conduction wasn’t too bad but the EMG…well, let’s just say, I didn’t enjoy it at all!

This is the year of special birthdays for the men in my family. My oldest son turned 16 in January, my youngest turned 13 in February, and this month, my husband will be 40.  Lots of celebrations for these awesome guys!

Although I no longer have little ones at home, I have been serving on the steering committee for the new Tipton County MOPS chapter. We just started in January and are growing! We’ve had new moms attend each meeting, which is encouraging.  My daughter is helping in the Moppets, the class for the preschoolers, and she loves it.  We will have a booth at the Atoka BBQ Fest on April 6th to pass out info and sell baked goods to help raise funds for our chapter. Please be sure to stop by and say hello!

My husband and I are taking PATH Classes at Youth Villages to prepare to foster/adopt and that requires a couple of nights a week away from home.  This is hard physically, because we are tired from being on the go all day already, emotionally because of some of the issues we hear about that these children go through, and mentally because of the massive amount of paperwork we have to fill out. The ultimate goal is to help a child and so we know that in the end, it will all be worth it.

I was blessed to serve on the Memphis Women’s Discipleship Walk last weekend.  Those are always fun!  I always leave the campground tired but in a good way.  To see the changes that take place in all of the women’s lives in those 3 short days is just amazing. If you have never experience this life changing weekend, I highly recommend you do so.  The dates for the next walk will be posted as soon as they are set.

My term as president of Junior Auxiliary of Tipton County is coming to an end which means I have lots of paperwork and reports to prepare for National Association of Junior Auxiliaries and things to do to get my chapter transitioned and ready for next year.  Emotionally, I am excited for change but will miss being actively involved in this great organization which I have given 6 years of my life to.  The last big event that I get to be a part of as an active member is the JA5K & Kids Fun Run which is going to be on April 6th.   You can register to participate by clicking on the link or on the image below.377709_10152040337927203_823734084_n

The Tipton County Relay for Life is quickly approaching and that means that the other committee members and I are in hyper-drive to get everything finalized for the big event…PLUS we have added something new this year that we are super excited about.  We are having a Paint The Town Purple Parade in Covington on May 4th!! If you have a group that would like to participate or are interested in sponsoring, please click on the link or image below for information and application.625613_10151579975947704_1610828444_n

I guess that is all for now… I am sure there is more but I need to get ready for our family night.  Since life has been crazy busy lately and we had nothing on the calendar tonight, we have set this night aside to just be together.  These are the moments I love the best.  Have a great weekend y’all!

Kroger Clearance Deals

31 Dec

image

I went to Kroger last night to get a few boxes of the Kellogg’s cereal in the three day sale and as always, I checked the clearance shelf.  I found these bottles of Old Spice Body Wash for $1.99, quickly did a search using the coupon database that I have bookmarked on my Droid and found that in the 11/27 PG insert there were coupons for $1 off when you buy 2…so I paid $1.49 each 🙂  I just had to share! ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS check the clearance section!

What makes this even better??  Well, today I saw that MyMemphisMommy is holding a contest right now where she wants readers to send in the great deals they find from now till February 1st.  One lucky reader will get a $25 American Express Card AND a 1 hour long shopping trip with Shana!! How cool is that?  So, I am sending her MY find and I encourage you to do the same.  If you don’t mind, when you share with her, be sure to tell her Christie Jarvis sent ya! It won’t give me any extra entries but I just want her to know that I am sending people her way 🙂

Sid the Science Kid Discovery Day

29 Dec

When I was a home childcare provider, we watched Sid the Science Kid every morning on PBS and the kids loved it! My youngest, who was about 8 when we first started watching it, had me record it just in case he missed something important!  HA HA He loved the way that Sid and his friends came up with good ideas.  I think the show helped to love exploring to learn.

Sid the Science Kid is coming to Memphis in February!  He will be at the Lichterman Nature Center on Saturday, February 25th and it is FREE but tickets ARE required!  Simply go to the event page and sign up for the time that you want to meet him, print your tickets and GO!

Week in Review

12 Aug

My last day of being a childcare provider was last Friday and you would think that would mean my days would be more relaxed but this has been the absolute busiest past 7 days that I have ever had in my life! I really had planned on posting about each day individually but the truth is, when I actually was able to sit down and use my computer each day, I was working on stuff for my clients and when I finished, I just wanted to turn it off and relax. So…here is my week in review!

Let’s start with Saturday.  A friend of mine and I took our boys & her nephew to the Fox 13 Weather Camp at the Agricenter in Memphis. The boys had a great time learning about how the weather people do the report using a green screen. They were able to meet some of the meteorologists from Fox 13, learn about air quality, make tornadoes in plastic bottles and launch weather balloons with their information tied on them so people who find them can report in and they can find out where their balloon went. It was really a fun, educational day and I look forward to seeing what they do next year.

Sunday we went to church and then I met with the Junior Auxiliary of Tipton County Fall Frenzy committee to work on the plans for this year’s event. After that, my family headed up to Covington to enjoy a luau with Genesis Church.

I debated on whether or not to tell you about my Monday but decided that yes, it is important information that someone might need to know.  I had a mammogram…yes, I actually am sharing this with the world.  Why?  Because even though I am “young” at 36, I did find a lump in my right breast in November and have been getting seen since to make sure everything is okay.  So far, so good. I go back next week to get the report from the Dr.  My point in telling you all of this is to remind you to check yourself and if you notice anything that doesn’t seem right, get it checked out by a Dr.

Monday evening was my Junior Auxiliary board meeting and it was hot in the JA room because the air unit has a hard time keeping the room cool so I was anxious to get home. On my way home, I stopped to visit K & D to see how their first day of school was. They excitedly told me about everything!  I came home and noticed my house didn’t feel cool inside…guess what??!  The main AC unit’s capacitor was bad so we had no air…great! Thankfully I AM married to an AC repairman so I knew it wouldn’t be long before he would fix it.

Since I am normally home during the day, I am listed as the “emergency” back up for some of my family members and friends kids and Tuesday, on the 2nd full day of school, I got a call to go pick up one of the kids.  It was my 15 yr old niece. Since our house was so hot, I didn’t think she would be comfortable so I took her home and left her there…her mom (my sister) got home soon afterwards to take care of her.  My husband got home around 2:30 to fix our air but even after he got it fixed, it took a little while for the unit to cool the house down.

Tuesday evening I went to the NACE Memphis monthly meeting which was held at the Racquet Club.  I really enjoy going to these because I get to network with the people who are at the top in the event planning business and by getting to know them better am able to learn how I can help promote NACE and their members.  When I got home, the house was nice and cool.

I had to leave my house at 7 am Wednesday morning to get to the UT College of Dentistry for new patient orientation to see if it is something that can help my 16 year old daughter’s TMD. After talking to the lady about it, I don’t think they will be able to help her so I am looking at other options. I felt like I pretty much wasted a few hours, money to park and the gas to get there but hey, at least now I know how the UT Dental program works in case I do ever need it.

On Thursday I had to take my middle child back to the pediatrician to have his blood pressure checked. They were on their second week of using a new digital charting system (I don’t know what it is called) so it took them a bit longer than normal.  The Dr is really sweet and apologized.  I am sure they are all just as frustrated as the parents are with the back log but once they get used to everything, it is going to be great!  I am sure when we have to go back in 6 weeks for his recheck, things will be much smoother.

That afternoon, I met with some of the ladies who are helping lead Tipton County Home Educators to make some plans for the new year. We are so excited about some of the things that we have planned!  I am sure my kids are going to enjoy them as much as I will.

Today my boys entered their art projects in the Memphis-Area Home Education Association‘s Art Contest.  On the way there, we dropped off some homemade pimento cheese to my dad because he has been wanting some and I made some for our lunch so I decided to share.  After we dropped off the art, we had a couple of hours to kill so we headed over to Bartlett Lanes and used our Kids Bowl Free coupons to play two games. Then we went back to the art contest to see the entries and pick up their artwork. There were a lot of amazing pieces of art there. Both of my boys received participant ribbons and they both said that now that they have seen some of the other entries, they will know more on what to do for next year…and amazingly, my daughter said she wanted to enter next year too!

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading about my week.  Be sure to go read my guest post over at Hip Homeschool Moms and share with your friends. It is all about how you have to find out what works for you and your family.

Next week, I plan on working on getting everything ready for our new school year. We are using Illuminations this year and I am very excited about it.  I will be blogging about the projects we get to do throughout the year.  If you are doing ILM 3, I would love to see how your family uses the program as well.  Be sure you join the Illuminations Year 3 Yahoo list and share with the members there too.

That is all for now.  Have a blessed weekend!

Playhouse 51 Presents Patsy Cline Musical

8 Jun

Yesterday morning WREG Live at 9 posted on their Facebook page that they were going to have a singer perform on the show and talk about the upcoming production of a Patsy Cline musical.  I have always been a fan of Patsy Cline so I wanted to see this. I knew I wouldn’t be able to watch the episode live because I had an errand I had to do at that time so I set my DVR to record it.  I just watched it and got SOOOO excited!  I LOVE Patsy Cline and when I saw that it was being performed fairly close to home at Playhouse 51 I immediately went to their website for details. want to go see this!!  My schedule is pretty full for the next few weeks but I think I can do some rearranging so that I can go see this.  Go check your calendar and choose the date you will go see it.
